Little is known about precisely where gypsies come from, but they are thought to have come from India some 500 to 700 years ago, they first arrived in Spain in the 15th century thereabouts and brought Flamenco with them. Flamenco first became public when the first café cantante opened in Seville in 1842 and by the 1860s was well established in Adalucia, there are stories in the singing and dances handed down through generations by word of mouth, and castanets were adopted to enhance the finger snapping, tongue clicking and tapping with a stick, for more extensive and interesting history of the Flamenco.
